Five saxophones, one rhythm section. Powerful arrangements. A versatile musical endeavour centered around some of the best standards yet open to new songs such as A Riff from the Rift by Niels Soerensen : listen to its African beat which sounds like a modest tribute to Abdullah Ibrahim. A full dose of humour and some uncanny quotes : even Robert Schuman emerges for four bars into Yardbird Suite. The first footprints of the band go back to 1981; that of a small tribe, then called Le Saxtet Chinois (the Chinese part of the name coming from an unfathomable and untranslatable pun in French), of three saxes, bass, piano, drums : six altogether, the count is correct. As time went by, the number of saxes grew to five, one guitar appeared, the piano and the pun disappeared : here comes Le Saxtet. The original concept has stayed unaltered from the first days of the band : good jazz, allowing full use of the entire palette of the five saxophones (and, sometimes, just for good measure, the flute, the clarinet and even the bass clarinet), arranged by the founder of the group, Niels Soerensen and other great arrangers like Bill Holman – You Can Depend on Me - or on the French side Pascal Thouvenin who signs here the score of Hank Mobley’s This I Dig of You. Le Saxtet has played mainly in Switzerland, with occasional dashes to France, as at the Vienna Jazz Festival where the famous French saxophonist Gerard Badini, having heard the performance, suggested to join the band for a concert to be organized in Switzerland. The concert was a complete success, as was a small tour in Arras and St-Quentin (France) in late 2008. This is the second CD for Le Saxtet. _____________________________________________________________ Cinq saxophones, une section rythmique. Des arrangements stimulants pour un répertoire solide qui fait la part belle aux meilleurs standards. Parfois aussi des thèmes originaux comme ici A Riff from the Rift avec un balancement africain que ne renierait pas Abdullah Ibrahim. Une solide dose d’humour et quelques citations décalées : voyez plutôt Yardbird Suite où même Robert Schumann s’invite pour quatre mesures. Il faut remonter à l'année 1981 pour découvrir les premières traces de l’orchestre, qui s’appelait alors Le Saxtet chinois. Il s'agissait alors d'une petite tribu de trois saxophonistes, un bassiste, un pianiste, un batteur : six musiciens, le compte y est. Au fil des ans, les saxophones ont passé de trois à cinq, un guitariste est apparu, le pianiste a disparu, les trois saxophonistes originels sont restés, le calembour a fait son temps et voici Le Saxtet. Le concept de départ est resté intact : une musique de qualité, qui tire parti de toute la palette des saxophones – et, parfois, pour faire bonne mesure, de la flûte, de la clarinette et de la clarinette basse – au gré d'arrangements le plus souvent originaux de Niels Soerensen et de grands arrangeurs comme Bill Holman – You Can Depend On Me – ou Pascal Thouvenin, lequel signe ici l’orchestration des célèbres chorus de Hank Mobley sur This I Dig of You. Le Saxtet a promené sa bonne humeur principalement en Suisse, avec des pointes en France comme au Festival de Vienne où Gérard Badini qui passait par là fut séduit par ce qu'il entendit au point de proposer lui-même l'organisation d'un concert commun – ce qui fut fait à Neuchâtel quelques mois plus tard – , comme aussi à Arras et St-Quentin lors d’une mini-tournée qui se révéla un joli succès. Ce CD est le deuxième disque enregistré par Le Saxtet.
